The Tamborrada of San Sebastian
The Tamborrada of San Sebastian
The Tamborrada of San Sebastian is one of the most emblematic celebrations in the Basque Country, held every 20 January to commemorate the day of San Sebastian, patron saint of the city. This event has its roots in the 19th century and has become a deeply-rooted tradition in the local culture.
The festival begins at midnight on 19 January in the Plaza de la Constitución, where the city's flag is raised, marking the start of 24 hours of uninterrupted drumming. Throughout the day, more than 15,000 participants, divided into different companies, parade through the streets beating drums and barrels. The participants dress in traditional costumes, including Napoleonic soldiers‘ and cooks’ uniforms, in a tribute to the history of the city and its gastronomic societies.
The history of the Tamborrada dates back to the Napoleonic occupation, when the people of San Sebastian began to imitate and mock the French soldiers by beating water barrels as drums. This symbolic act of resistance has been transformed over time into a celebration of the identity and community spirit of the people of San Sebastian.
