Self-Style in the Age of Fast Fashion

Self-Style in the Age of Fast Fashion

In recent years, the fashion industry has experienced a revolution with the emergence of fast fashion. Gone are the days when designers launched only two collections a year, spring/summer and autumn/winter, dictating trends for months at a time. Today, fashion evolves at incredible speed, with new trends emerging and disappearing within weeks.

The Evolution of Fast Fashion and Ephemeral Trends

Fashion, as a reflection of contemporary society, has adapted to rapidly changing consumer habits and expectations. In the mid-20th century, the arrival of fast fashion shops such as Zara and H&M revolutionised the sector, offering collections that were accessible to all. This concept of ‘Ready To Wear’ drastically reduced the time between the creation of a garment and its arrival in shops.

Over time, fast fashion evolved further, with brands launching between 12 and 16 mini-collections a year, and in some cases, new collections almost every two weeks. This pace accelerated further with the emergence of ultra-fast fashion, with brands such as Shein, FashionNova or Boohoo responding almost instantaneously to the latest trends and consumer preferences.

This phenomenon has transformed the perception of fashion. Trends no longer last for months, often not even weeks, but are quickly consumed and replaced. This constant renewal has led to a saturation of the market, where consumers feel overwhelmed by the avalanche of new styles and products.

Defending one's own style

Personal style is a statement of authenticity. In an environment where trends come and go at a rapid pace, having a defined personal style allows us to maintain consistency in our image and be true to ourselves. However, this does not mean that we should ignore the trends of the season; on the contrary, we can seek inspiration from them and adapt them to our own style, choosing those that really resonate with our personality. In this way, we can combine the best of both worlds: new trends and our own style, which is also a more conscious and sustainable form of consumption, moving away from the cycle of fast and disposable consumption promoted by fast fashion.
